What is the Primitive Catholic Community?
In short, it is a religious order comprised of men and women dedicated to ministry to the marginalized while, at the same time, remaining faithful to the faith of the primitive Church.

What do you mean by 'Primitive Catholic'?
It means holding fast, inasmuch as possible, to the doctrine, discipline, and practice of the Christian faith as it existed during the apostolic era, and in the first three centuries thereafter, before Christianity and the State became intertwined.

Do you have a residential monastery?
Not at this time, though a clear vision for Holy Family Abbey is a part of the thought process behind the formation of the Primitive Catholic Community.

How do you manifest Community?
Our order is in the formative stages at this time, and so we are experimenting with ways to manifest community. As our existence coalesces it is vital that we make intentional efforts to develop our sense of community. Modern technology offers some options for regular communication, but nothing takes the place of worshiping together, eating together, and just being in the presence of one another. We strive to make use of both electronic and personal means of developing fellowship as we grow our Community.

What is your stance on the various theological and moral teachings of Christianity?
Those interested in membership in our Community will express an adherence to the Apostles' and Nicene Creeds as sufficient summaries of the orthodox Christian faith, will agree to the plain words of the New Testament on the way that believers are to live their lives, and will generally hold to historic views on issues such as the creation vs. evolution debate, birth control and abortion, the nature of marriage, and preparing for death. That said, there are some positions held by our Community which may be termed, by some, as more 'progressive'. We reject the idea of just war, discourage patriotism, and strongly encourage nonviolence. Obviously, it is beyond the scope of an page such as this to answer detailed questions regarding our position on every point of theology or practice; but if you have a specific question, please feel free to use the contact box to the right to ask us.

What is your liturgical life like?
Our liturgical rite incorporates the basic structure familiar to the Roman, Anglican, and Lutheran liturgies of the Western Christian Church. Like other religious orders, there are ceremonies and prayers unique to our ritual as well. Our liturgy incorporates some Eastern influences.  Our liturgical calendar is also makes provision for commemorating several occasion in the fall associated with the biblical Jewish calendar, those being the Feast of Trumpets, the Day of Atonement, and the Solemnity of Tabernacles. Our Community publishes a Sacramentary, Lectionary, forms for Daily Prayer, and other resources to support our members, their ministries, and our faith communities.
